DIY Smores Bar Gift

Creating a smores bar can be a wonderful, budget-friendly DIY gift for anyone, and can be a really fun present from kids to grandparents! Which is exactly what Miles and I decided to create for one of his grandparents! For under $10, we were able to grab all the parts we needed from our local Dollar Tree and Target, and then jazz them up with extra craft supplies that I always keep on hand!

What You'll Need

  • 3 large crates (similar)
  • 1 pack of 4 clothes pin signs (exact and similar)
  • Marshmallows (exact)
  • Hershey bars pack (exact)
  • Graham crackers (exact)
  • Skewers (exact)
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Silver Sharpie
  • Wood stain & sealant or paint (optional)
  • Treat bags

What You'll Do

You can leave your crates as is in their original natural wood color, or you can use acrylic paint or wood stain to cover it up. Regardless of what you decide to do, I can't recommend enough that you should put the food in treat bags before placing them inside to ensure safety of the food. I know that seems like it's taking away from the novelty of the present, but it'll still be cute and functional with the added bags.

If you decide to paint or stain, I recommend covering the outside with some kind of protecting sealant to preserve the color. I don't think there are food safe sealants, which is why I recommend keeping the treats in bags.

Using your glue gun, apply glue to either the long sides or the short ends of one crate; this will be your middle crate. You'll then attach the other 2 to the middle crate. Because I know this recipient will likely be placing this on a short and narrow console table, I've glued the long sides together.

Take the clothespin labels and write using a chalkboard pen or Sharpie to label them: graham crackers, chocolate bars, marshmallows, and roasting sticks. Clip each label to the front of the crates, but place the sticks in the same crate as the marshmallows.

You can fill your treat bags with marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers broken in half the long way, or leave them in the original packing if they fit. This will make it easy for everyone to grab the parts they need and get straight into the smore making! If you fill the crates and still have ingredients leftover, place them inside the gift bag so they have extras to enjoy later on!

Tips and Other Ideas

Don't want to use treat bags? You can also replace them with low height glasses! This makes the container more reusable and the clear glass makes it so you can still see the crates! You can probably also squeeze in a tall but narrow shot glass to hold the skewers.

This could also work really well as a hot coco bar or a cookie decorating bar! Since the ingredients are smaller, you can use these plastic treat test tubes to hold things like hot coco mix, sprinkles, mini marshmallows, and more!

What kind of special holiday-themed bar would you make using this same setup? Let me know in the comments below! If you recreate this, be sure to tag me on Instagram (@withlovejoey).
