In a Galaxy Party... Far, Far Away

Its hard to believe my little guy is a big ol' 6 year old now! Our Star Fighter Pilot asked for a party out of this galaxy and this tired mama did her best to deliver just that. While our party this year was smaller with just family, I wanted to make sure it was still as larger-than-life as I could swing it.

To decorate for Miles' Star Wars ships themed birthday party, I went deep into a galaxy design and accented it with ships. Luckily for us, Miles had recently gotten really into vintage Star Wars micromachines, so we used all of his toys as the main decoration accents. I used a large roll of black disposable tablecloth to cover the dining table and back wall. The balloon arch was a galaxy balloon arch kit from Amazon, while the balloon letters and number were a Dollar Tree find.

To build the party favors for his at-home celebration and his at-school celebration, I filled goodie bags with a few crayons and printed out free Star Wars color book pages that I found on Google. The key is to print 4 pages per sheet, double-sized and then cut down to fit in the bags. They make for great mid-party activities, or the parents can stash them away for restaurant or road trip activities. I also made some lightsaber handles in Photoshop and printed them on label paper, cut to size, and wrapped them around glowsticks for the kids! If you're going to do this DIY, I highly recommend getting strong label paper as the stuff I had couldn't handle sticking to itself. The kids luckily didn't care (what kid doesn't love a good glowstick)! Looking to download the artwork for your child's party? In true Spurgeon fashion, our menu for kids' birthday parties are pizza with sides of chips & dip, popcorn, pouches and cupcakes. I prefer to keep the menu super simple for our boys' birthdays with mostly eat on-the-go items so parents have the freedom to eat something easy when they chase littles around and all of the kids we know will NEVER say no to a slice of cheese pizza, no matter how much fun they're all having!

The cupcake toppers were graphics I bought off Etsy. I printed and cut the ships using my Silhouette Portrait 3. They're double-sided and all I did was mirror the images and stick them to each other with extra long toothpicks in-between so I wouldn't have to worry about gluing anything. I did a mixture of Star Wars and blue metallic cupcake liners for homemade hacked chocolate box cake mix (check out Johnny Cakes on YouTube) with a 3-color cream cheese frosting and a mixture of different types of sprinkles.

Miles had such a blast with his birthday party and we were so happy to see him so lit up. Like with his last few birthday parties, he absolutely had a hand in coming up with ideas for what we could do and how we could utilize all the fun things we already had. I can't wait to see what this clever little boy thinks of for his next birthday party!
