Miles' LEGO-Themed Birthday Party
For Miles' 4th birthday, I was so sure that he'd ask for a police or firemen themed birthday. To my pleasant surprise, he told me, very specifically, that he wanted a LEGO party with a blue cake. If there's one thing Miles is, it's specific and particular. The nerd in me couldn't help but fist-bump the air and head straight for my computer to get to planning his special 4 year old LEGO-themed birthday party!
The Decor
I learned from Miles' first birthday party that solid color party pieces will carry you a long way. Like, the span of a few years in some cases. I purchased all of our LEGO-themed birthday party supplies (dinner plates, desert plates, napkins, cups, snack buckets and small craft bags) from Party City for about $30, but I bought the balloons from Dollar Tree (highly recommend for cost). Most kids' birthday parties will center around basic themes. If they already have the toys for that theme, utilize their collection as part of the party. Let the solid colors accent everything else! Any unused items can be saved for another party.
Since the guest list was pretty small, we only had 3 other kids at the party to shop favors for. Each kid took home a small yellow gift bag that had a LEGO minifigure face in it. Inside was a LEGO minifigure mystery bag, some chocolate and a bottle of bubbles. I used the same decorating ideas for the yellow snack buckets. I cut all the designs on my Silhouette Portrait using scrap adhesive vinyl. Miles now uses them for LEGO storage when he plays and rebuilds his cars!
For room decor, I kept it simple using some of the larger, more advanced sets from our family collection. This included some of Mike's Star Wars ships, as well as Miles' pirate boat and Technic Jeep. When everyone came inside, we put on The LEGO Movie for everyone to watch. The cloth banner on our fireplace was from Target. I used his LEGO City road plates for the table runner and placed the snacks on top. I used my 2-tiered tray from Target Dollar Spot to display the mini cupcakes with our Star Wars: Micromachine sets.
The Food
We kept the food for his LEGO-themed birthday party easy and simple with pepperoni pizzas from Costco, salad chocolate cake and mini cupcakes, cheese-its and Cheeto puffs (some of Miles' favorites). We were so glad we bought 4 pizzas because, while it was too much at 1 pm when we all had lunch, it ended up being the right amount when we realized it was 6 pm and we were all still partying the day away!
To make the cake, I grabbed a simple box of deck devil's chocolate cake mix and pre-colored blue buttercream frosting. I used my 4" rounds to make him a double-layered cake with his favorite blueberry jam in the middle for filling. I used the leftover cake mix to make mini cupcakes. I grabbed this brick mold from Michael's and used Ghirardelli white chocolate melts and gel food coloring to make the bricks. They didn't all come out as perfect as I hoped, but everyone loved them and the kids had a blast eating them! The kids mostly ate the chocolate bricks and ignored the rest, haha!
The Fun
Miles' friends are all younger than him and still learning the concept of party games, we decided to just take advantage of the warm weather and let the kids be kids outside! We have a water table, slide, playhouse and picnic bench that the kids love playing with, as well as a few ride-along cars. Everyone had such a great time that our party ended up going for several hours after it was supposed to end! The adults were even having so much fun that we barely looked at our phones the whole time. I'm so grateful that, even in these times, we've been able to stay bubbled with our group so our toddlers can all have a group of friends to turn to for fun!
Bring on the Big 5!
I can't wait to see what Miles ends up choosing for his 5th birthday! We'll probably keep that one fairly low-key because we're already planning a HUGE 3 theme park trip to celebrate the launch of Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood. Maybe we'll theme something around that? Who knows! I know, though, that whatever it ends up being, it'll be perfect and just right for him.
