Miles' Buzz Lightyear 1st Birthday

Miles celebrated his first birthday with some of our closest friends and family on March 23 and it was such a blast! I couldn't have been more pleased with how everything turned out for his Buzz Lightyear 1st birthday party!

Things were a bit chaotic with the move and our house being in such a disarray for a few weeks, but everything came out great! We had the party at my mother-in-law's house. Like my baby shower, I set up the dining room space as our Buzz Lightyear space central complete with a claw, alien cupcakes, Buzz soaring through space and color-themed dinnerware! Curious about how I pulled together this out-of-this-world birthday celebration? Check out my breakdown below:

Decor

I made the claw by cutting up extra cardboard boxes that we had lying around and wrapping them up with aluminum foil. I hung it using some decorative baker's twine that I had from the chandelier above the cupcakes. We still have the claw just in case it finds a home in his in-progress sci-fi bedroom! The cupcakes were displayed using a disposable cupcake display since we couldn't find any of ours at the time.

I'm most proud about how the backdrop all came together! I used a disposable table cloth for the background and decorated it silver foam glitter star stickers and this SVG file from LoveSVG that I transformed to better look like Buzz's ship! Man, was it a labor of love! We still have it as I plan to make a framed art for Miles' room with it. The balloon letters are from my baby shower, which have also been his bedroom decor for the past year. I got all the balloons at my local Party City and told them to use colors they thought would work. This was the best decision I could have made because my original order (which was unfortunately lost), didn't have these colors (I found my receipt a week later).

I kept all the plasticware solid colors and unthemed so we could save the extras for future parties. I did a cut out of circles and M's on my friend's Silhouette Cameo to make the napkin rings. And the rest of the decor were toys Miles already had.

Food

I used blue foil liners for the cupcakes to make the alien's outfit, and dyed yellow cake mix with some hand-mixed lime green food coloring to match the white fluffy frosting I dyed. Here's a link to Disney's food video to see how they decorated theirs since that's the plan I followed. I used sour straws and sour belts for the ears and antennae, black frosting for the mouths, and small candy eyes for the eyes.

Miles' smash cake was made with these Wilton mini springfoam cake pans that I've had forever and never had a good oven to bake them in. These came out perfect! I used a bit of the cake mix to make these and used the rest of the mix to do 12 cupcakes. While he never really ate it, I still had a lot of fun watching him dig his hands in. I did my best, lol! I decorated with some frosting and used Wilton Cake Paint to try and make it look like Buzz's suit, and used these candles I found at The Dollar Tree. Haha, I did my best!

We did a Planet Pizza themed menu with spaghetti (long noodles to represent long life in Filipino tradition) and pizza from Costco. I tried to cover the box with a print out of the logo I found online, but forgot just how large the boxes are! Oh goodness... I highly recommend doing this with a regular large pizza from like Little Caesar's or somewhere similar. My mom brought lumpia, and my mother-in-law provided salad, fruit and drinks. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people to help us out make this day!
